Malta's stategic position in the Mediterranean Sea has given it a long, interesting history of migration. Emigration was a significant aspect of Maltese life in the last century, however, Malta is also a magnet for all sorts of immigrants. Most recently, the plight of irregular immigrants from various countries seeking a better life in Europe has become an almost daily topic in the news, especially because very few are actually granted refugee status. HMS Brazen is the first Royal Navy Warship to enter Grand Harbour since HMS London left in 1979 at the end of the British military presence in Malta. During the 5 day visit, about 33,000 people boarded the ship.

TeleMalta Corporation issues the telephone directory for Malta & Gozo on CD-ROM for the first time.

The Ship of Fools: The World Upside Down
The Ship of Fools is a sailing theatre company in the carnivalesque tradition of the travelling buffoon. They sail from harbour to harbour on their 1916 Dutch herring logger that serves as their stage and home. As part of the Malta Arts Festival: Summer 2006, they will be in the Grand Harbour Marina, Birgu.
