| Maltese come together |
| by Martin Debattista |
Welcome to the Maltese community on the Internet, hosted by egroups.com
There are several discussion groups on egroups.com originating from Malta or popular with Maltese people around the world. They have been set up mainly to keep Maltese in contact with each other and to exchange opinions in general. Matters relating to the Maltese and Maltese islands always take priority above everything else.
aboutmalta.com interviewed Francis Borg, moderator for Malta Forum, one of the most popular Maltese discussion groups on egroups, on the occasion of its 2nd anniversary:
1) How did the Malta Forum began?
Founded August 12, 1998 to take on the role of the Malta List which was being folded up at the time. I offered to run the forum as I was already involved with the Internet at the time.2) What is its function?
The Malta Forum was founded to carryon the objectives of its predecessor ie to bring together on the net, Maltese people and others interested in our Island homeland.3) How many members does it have? Of what type? Where are they from?
At present the Maltforum has 118 members. They come with all sorts of backgrounds, There are doctors and lawyers as well as scientists teachers and engineers as well as government officers and company employees and executives.4) What are their favourite topics?
Invariably the topics tend to centre around the daily life in Malta and to this effect a lot of topics are generated by news as reported in the papers.5) Why has the number of postings decreased subtstantially this year when compared to last year?
I suspect that the decrease in the number of postings reflect the increase of similar lists on the net. However this forum does enjoy a
high quality of postings.6) What was egroups chosen to host the forum?
Mostly because it was a free list with little advertising. Egroups also offered something unique at the time complete access to archived postings.7) What is the role of moderator of a forum? How do you go about it?
The role of the moderator as I see it is to allow free discussion with little intervention and see that the basic rules of the forum are
respected. I believe all members opinions should be fully respected without being drowned by comments from the moderator himself. The Forum is I also provide a personal email support for those that have problems with the net or the forum itself.8) What is the future of this forum? Any plans or dreams???
This forum has always prided itself on providing what the members want rather than what I want. I tend to follow the wishes expressed in the postings when they arise. I would like to revive the ezine I used to produce i.e. Newsbits which talked about the various activities by members especially regarding matters relating to Malta.

Subscribing
There are three degrees of subscriptions on e-group fora:
(1) One is to receive the individual e-mails as submitted by members. At times, this could be too much for those who do not empty their mail box daily.
(2) The second is to receive one daily mail (digest/summeries) but it will include all the e-mails of the previous day.
(3) Thirdly, is to view what you want on the web. This way, you may choose what to read.
