THANK YOU
MALTA!

This June marks the 29th anniversary of an event most Americans have never heard of but those of us who were involved in will never forget.

On June 8, 1967 - the fourth day of the Six Day War - the U.S. Navy ship, U.S.S. Liberty (AGTR-5) was attacked without warning by the combined forces of the Israeli Air Force and Navy. Despite access to overwhelmingly superior firepower the attackers failed to conquer the unarmed U.S.S. Liberty. However, the 90 minute onslaught resulted in 821 cannon and rocket holes as well as a 40-foot torpedo hole in the Liberty's starboard side. It also left 34 dead and 171 wounded out of a crew of 295.

A few days later the Liberty steamed proudly into Valletta harbor to begin what was to become a six-week stay in drydock to repair the ship.

During our stay in Malta we were overwhelmed at the honor, support and compassion we received from the Maltese people. It was a reception that has never been equaled even in our own country - and it is a reception that has never been forgotten.

Unfortunately I suspect no U.S.S. Liberty survivor has taken the time to put pen to paper in order to express our gratitude for the way we were treated during what was a very emotionally trying time for all of us. I must bear particular responsibility for such a grievous oversight since I was the leader of the U.S.S. Liberty Veterans Association for eight years.

A simple "thank you" from my shipmates and I to the people of Malta seems so inadequate in light of what was bestowed upon us. You touched each and every one of us and for that we will be eternally grateful.

Sincerely,

Joe Meadors
