A MEMORIAL
FOR

FRANCIS EBEJER

Francis Ebejer was born in Dingli, Malta, in 1925, the first of a family of seven children, and grew up in an educational environment with both parents being teachers. His father later on became head teacher and is mainly remembered for his pioneering work in the Ghaqda tal-Malti in the twenties.

Francis took up the same career as his father, first as teacher specialising in the English language and later as head teacher in two localities, namely Siggiewi and Zurrieq, where he became renowned for his strict discipline and dedication to duty.

He was a bilingual writer (Maltese and English) and began his literary career with radio and television plays and short stories, some of which were published in New York between 1980 and 1992, others broadcast over the network of the British Broadcasting Corporation and others translated into Italian and Dutch and broadcast over the respective state radios. With the success encountered, Ebejer forged ahead with writing and producing on the stage and succeeded in creating a revolution in Maltese modern theatre production and direction. He was also a writer of novels with most books being published in New York and London.

Ebejer was a member of P.E.N., the international organisation of Authors, Honorary President of the Moviment Malti Letterarju and member of the Council of the Akkademja tal-Malti. He won many honours and prizes for his work produced either on Tv or on the stage and was awarded The Malta Literary Award four times, the 'Cheyneh Award for the Best Producer' in 1984, the 'Phoenicia Trophy for Culture" in 1982 and 1985, and the prize 'Citta' di Valletta' in 1989. In 1986, he received the Medaille d'Honneur de la Ville d'Avignon in France for one of his plays translated in French.

Ebejer died at his residence in Swieqi in 1993, and the burial ceremony at Dingli Cemetery was attended by a huge crowd of mourners including members of Parliament, actors, actresses, stage producers and publishers.

A year after his death, an organisation known as FRIENDS OF FRANCIS EBEJER (MEMORIAL) COMMITTEE was set up with the aim of collecting funds for a monument in his honour at Dingli. The monument calculated to cost 20,000 US dollars has been entrusted to famous Maltese sculptor Anton Agius. The Committee is inviting Maltese individuals and communities throughout the world to make a token donation for this monument. All donations will be acknowledged. Cheques are to be sent to Honorary Secretary Joe Abela at 55 Main Street, Dingli, Malta. For further communication, you may wish to contact the Secretary via telephone (00356) 459358; or fax (00356)459401 or e-mail address: labyrinth@mail.global.net.mt.
