Sports in the Maltese Islands started developing in the period during which Malta was a British colony. Before, the Maltese had very few options on what to do in their freetime. It was either go for a walk, go hunting or else go fishing. The English settlers and servicemen started to practice the sports they used to take part in back at home. Cricket, athletics, polo and horse-racing were already established activities in the nineteenth century. At first, the Maltese just used to watch but then they tried the games themselves. And so the Maltese started to take part and organised activities in the various kinds of sports. In the last two decades, the media helped several other sports to establish themselves in the Maltese Islands.
