The Maltese people enjoy an overall good state of health. The average life expectance is over 80 years for women, and infant mortality is only at 1% as is the case with most industrialised countries. However, Malta has a very high incidence of deaths from heart-realted diseases. The Government provides a comprehensive health service to all Maltese citizens which is entirely free of charge. All residents have access to preventive, investigative, curative and rehabilitative services in Government Health Centres and Hospitals across the Maltese Islands. This health service is funded by taxation and about 10% of the country's recurrent expenditure is spent on this sector. In the past few years we have seen an increase in popularity of private health services and health insurance. Subsequently, Government health services have suffered from a loss of personnel to the private health sector partly because of differences in working conditions between the public and the private sectors.
