The Sovereign Military Order of Malta, popularly known as the Knights of St. John or Knights of Malta, ruled the Maltese Islands from 1530 until 1798. They brought an economic, cultural, social and political renaissance to Malta. Their legacy, in the form of the magnificent fortifications and other splendid buildings that have withstood the test of time, is still strong and contributing to the well-being of the Maltese Islands by attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.
