Malta has an ancient tradition of visual arts. The neolithic temples have not only offered inspiration to contemporary artists, but are also living proof that the spiral is a universal symbol which has been discovered throughout various ancient cultures around the world. The cult of the fertility goddesses of the mediterranean are also fascinating subjects for contemporary artist. Nevertheless, Maltese visual artist use various types of media and create works depicting anything from the abstract to the sacred.
